'Memento Mori' Series
Memento mori is a Latin phrase which translates as "Remember you will die." It is a genre of art which serves to remind people of their own mortality. All this work is in some way or other a memento mori: whether it be shown more directly as in the 'Death Of Childhood' with the huge Mexican Day Of the Dead inspired skull pinata, or the scythe bearing figure in 'Ursa Minus' offering a beckoning hand to the Polar bear or in a more understated way in "The Hypnotist" with the symbolic pocket watch on the table between the characters.
"I feel my work refers to death because it is part of life! It is something that is both personal and universal; that connects everything. It is something we all have to face and yet no-one fully understands. It is unknown and indefinite and so a very creative force in my mind. I believe it is important to be philosophical about life and by artistically musing on our mortality and dealing with that fear- gives art work an emotional value and a psychological depth that i think is intrinsic to all good art."
