New work by Tim Lane - 'Revelations' at Knifesmith Gallery

Detail from Jekyll & Hyde (2010) by Tim Lane

New originals further explore Tim's interest in themes from classical mythology and classic literature. Images explore the existence or non-existence of salvation after death and the afterlife and the destructive forces of human hubris and the corruption of power. The title of the show plays on the biblical reference with its apocalyptic visions and moral punishments and also on the realisations of human weaknesses with the unfolding stories of corruption of figures of power in our society. www.knifesmithgallery.co.uk

Paintings

Tim's painting style is almost exclusively figurative or illustrative and although quite traditional in some respects, it is modern in tone and sometimes possesses an almost 'filmic' quality due to its narrative elements. He is inspired by the celebration of the cycle of life, as seen in the colourful and fascinating ceremonial rites of ancient cultures; with their need to make provisions for death and their obsession with the afterlife. His paintings are loosely in the 'memento mori' tradition; through their concentration on death and the darker, more irreverent side of life, we are reminded of the fragility of life and civilization which encourages us to value it all the more.

Tim paints largely from his imagination; painting people especially without need of any reference. Animals and some other more specific elements, however are a sort of a 'frankenstein-esque' composition of various different visual references, but never directly copied. The paintings are arrived at organically, like a story unfolding, always with this over-arching theme of death; evoking a dark sense of mystery and mood. He is interested always in convincingly capturing the emotional interactions between his characters, which make the images more emotive and affecting. Also by making the background of the images very much secondary -sometimes they are just one main colour, or slightly abstracted- this human interaction is highlighted still further.

Other inspiration includes the northern renaissance, ceremony, masks, Victoriana, childhood fears, dark literature, the endless visual ideas and possibilities of the afterlife, apocalyptic visions, the super-natural.

All unsold originals are available to buy and all images are available as limited edition giclée prints. (run of 50)
